Gerd Leipold

Climate Transparency, Biberach + Berlin, DE

Gerd is a physicist and climate scientist. For many years he was a main driver at Greenpeace, first as the Director of Greenpeace Germany in the 1980s, then running the international disarmament campaign and later in the position of the Executive Director of Greenpeace International, shaping the profile and global influence of the organization. He has advocated the need for global transition towards sustainable developments as a tough negotiator and campaigner but also consultant and mediator between conflicting interests.

Since 2015, Gerd has co-invented and pushed the agenda of Climate Transparency, a global partnership to stimulate a radical upgrade of G20 climate action. The initiative aims to convince the G20 partners to shift investments towards zero carbon technologies and to make a change through enhanced transparency and careful negotiation. He is trustee of the Humboldt – Viadrina School of Governance and a member of the advisory board of the German development organization Welthungerhilfe.

In the region, Gerd is chairing the advisory board of Biberach University of Applied Sciences.

He will be moderator of the panel CONNECTED + BALANCED at the Urban Land Conference.
